Healing Essentials

  • Wearing your dentures continuously for the first 24 hours after surgery helps reduce swelling, promotes healing, and protects sensitive areas. After the initial 24 hours, your denturist will assess the fit and make necessary adjustments. Tissue conditioners may also be used to ensure a comfortable fit as you heal.

  • Maintain excellent hygiene to prevent infection and promote healing:

    • Brush your dentures and gums 3 times a day with a soft-bristled brush.

    • Soak your dentures daily in a denture cleaner to remove bacteria and stains.

    • Avoid toothpaste, as it can scratch your dentures.

  • Rinsing your mouth with gels or medicated solutions can soothe sensitive areas, prevent dry mouth, and aid healing. Use as directed by your denturist or healthcare provider.

  • For the first three nights, sleep with your dentures in to support healing. Afterward, it is generally recommended to remove dentures at night to let your gums rest, unless advised otherwise due to sleep apnea or airway concerns.

Tips for Adjusting

  • Learning to eat, speak, and smile with your new dentures takes practice. Here are some tips:

    • Practice speaking out loud or reading in front of a mirror to improve clarity.

    • Start with softer foods, gradually introducing firmer textures as you grow more comfortable.

    • Work with your denturist for any adjustments needed to improve fit or function.

  • Healing takes time. Be patient with yourself and listen to your body’s signals. Incorporate rest, light exercise, and stress-reducing activities into your routine to support a healthy recovery process.
