Post Surgery Care
In most situations patients are able to wear immediate dentures directly after their teeth have been extracted. Surgical / immediate dentures have been intentionally constructed to be modified throughout your healing process (6 months - 1 year).
For best surgical healing results, follow these instructions:
Wearing your dentures for the first 24 hours allows your gums to clot and for swelling to go down. It is preferable for patients to come in for a post operative check with your denturist to ensure the denture is seated well and to check for any major deficiencies. Minor issues will be adjusted at the first tissue conditioner appointment.
Wear Your Dentures For The First 24 Hours After Surgery
Applying oral gel helps your teeth stay in and will smooth your gums during healing. You can use this as much or as little as you’d like. It also helps a number of patients with chronic dry mouth.
Gels and Rinses
Brush your teeth 3x a day and/or after each meal. Remove dentures for a minimum of 1 hour each day for your gums to stay healthy. Soak denture(s) each day in a denture cleaner to kill bacteria and keep them clean. Never use toothpaste on your dentures.
Keep Up With Denture Hygiene
Sleep with your dentures in for the first 3 nights. After the first three nights, it is recommended to sleep without it unless you have sleeping disorders/airway obstructions.
Night Time
Functioning with your dentures will not come easy and it is your responsibility to learn how to use your new prosthetics. Practicing, smiling/emoting differently, talking/reading out loud, and chewing/eating different foods slowly.

Practice Using Your Dentures
Rehabilitating your mouth is a process and will require time for your body and mind to work together with your new teeth. Be kind to yourself during this time.
Practicing Self Care After Surgery
Post surgery nutrition
After oral surgery it is very important to ensure you are getting rest, fluids, and proper nutrition. A nutritious diet minimizes the risk of complications, helps reduce swelling, provides nourishment and aids in the healing process. The foods you eat should be soft and easy to chew, they should also be abundant in vitamins, minerals, energy and protein to assist wound healing.
