Preparing for Your New Smile
What to Expect Before Surgery
The best way to get ready for the start of surgical denture treatment is by understanding the risks, treatment plan and having a good support system in place. At our clinic we find that patients who mentally prepare have a less stressful transition into their denture rehabilitation journey. Surgical /immediate dentures require patience, commitment, and adaptation for success. Every patient's rehabilitation process is unique to their situation.
-
Healing typically takes about 6–8 weeks for your gums to recover fully. During this time, your dentist will monitor your progress and ensure everything is healing properly. For more extensive cases, healing may take longer, depending on factors like bone density, diet, and smoking habits. Regular follow-up appointments help ensure a smooth recovery.
-
If you’re getting implants, healing generally takes a minimum of 6 months. This timeline allows your gums and jawbone to heal before the implants are placed. In some cases, your surgeon may schedule a separate implant placement appointment after your initial healing period to maximize success.
-
Not immediately. Your dentures are designed to be temporary during the initial healing phase, as swelling and gum changes are common after surgery. After healing, permanent dentures will be created to ensure a proper fit and maximum comfort.
-
Immediate dentures protect your gums as they heal and help maintain your appearance. They also shield the surgical area from food debris, minimizing discomfort. While adjustments are often needed, same-day dentures can boost your confidence and make the transition to dentures smoother.
-
Adapting to dentures takes patience and time. It’s common to experience some discomfort or difficulty with chewing, speaking, or biting as you adjust. Over time, most patients adapt, and adjustments to the dentures may be made to improve the fit. Remember, every patient’s experience is unique, and support is always available.
-
If adapting proves challenging, we’ll work closely with you to explore other options, such as adjustments or implant-supported dentures. Our goal is to find a solution that works best for your needs and ensures you feel comfortable and confident.
-
Yes, many patients see excellent results with implant-supported dentures. They provide greater stability and functionality compared to traditional dentures, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. At our clinic, we often hear from patients who feel like they have their natural teeth back.
